Fishy inspires

A series of etchings I did last year on the theme Mother.
I didn’t submit a complete entry ( well, it’s not complete this time too cos the last few images are too depressing, it’s Mother’s day. )

Last year was my final year in Uni and I was about three or four months away from completing the studies. However, my mother fell ill and at some point, her life was in crucial danger. Being half a globe away, there was pretty nothing I could do except for breaking down and praying. I was desperate, to the extent that if I could exchange my health for hers, I’ll gladly take it; her importance in this family is immeasurable.

With my encouragement and console from close friends and tutors, I sorted out my emotions and concentrated on what I can do and need to do. Perhaps you can imagine at some point of the work process, my sight goes all blurry during the etching process because I am just not that strong of a person, especially since I devoted deeply into this. Understanding my situation, my tutor thought my emotions got the better of me as he expressed that it was insane to do nine pieces of etchings in that limited span of time. For me, the judging of this piece of work was no longer my primary interest; but rather, being able to illustrate how I feel as a daughter and how thankful I am to my mother.

Like how much I’m grateful to my mother, I thank every mother for your noble spirit.

“Elizabeth Siddal was a poet, painter, Pre-Raphaelite muse, and wife of Dante Gabriel Rossetti.”
“When she died of a laudanum overdose in 1862, Rossetti buried a notebook of his poems with her. Years later when her coffin was exhumed, it is said that her corpse was remarkably well preserved, and that the book of poems was tangled in her long coppery tresses, which had continued to grow after her death.”

“I recently saw a fantastic exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite paintings at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC [link]. It has been providing me with inspiration for the past couple of months. It’s open until mid-May (I think) & I would highly recommend it for anyone who loves Victorian painting, fantasy art or a penchant for the tragic”

My advice to anyone is don’t ever work digitally the cost of printing will make you cry in the rain.

I don’t remember drawing it/when I drew it, but it involved gratuitous use of mirroring/image flipping so it is clearly worth uploading.
